First off, basketball doesn't have die-hard fans. Rivalries have died since Jordan’s Bulls and Ewing’s Knicks have passed by. Now, most fans will admit they admire the opposing team's star player. There are exceptions (Jazz), but generally this is the case.
Some west teams tip off at 10:30 EST, so that might factor your decision. Games are roughly two and a half hours long.
ESPN/TNT usually has a good set of games they broadcast. Watching the post-game is pretty much the best you can get in any sport.
Pace is a huge factor for enjoyment. Some teams like to eat up all of the shot-clock (Trailblazers/Spurs), while some teams go all out (Suns/Knicks). More scoring is generally "prettier" but some still prefer the college style.
Some teams have a reputation of tanking seasons for the #1 draft pick. (Draft is so top loaded, maybe only 2 players actually start from each draft year). Don't pick those teams.
Shit is fucking rigged so don't bitch out if Stern wants the Lakers to win it all. Just accept it as form of entertainment.
The talent in each conference is so far and away, it makes baseball's NL/AL look fair. Honestly, before the all-star break, every West team has a shot at .500. East? Teams can enter the playoffs with losing seasons. Teams start tanking after the all-star game, if you wanted to know.
Also NBA teams are loving statistics. Brought over from hockey by the Houston Rockets the +/- has come to compete against PER for the end-all-be-all Stat for the NBA. There's win shares, the Four Factors, and yes, Pythagorean Wins.
