Dad’s family is from Fujian area circa 1850-60’s

Mom’s family is from Guangxi, Fangchenggang circa 1800’s

Dad’s family went from
Fujian > BeiHai, Guangxi > Hanoi, Vietnam > Los Angeles, USA

 

That’s like 4 different languages that sound nothing alike. (Think Swedish to English to Italian to Japanese)
As well, I can understand most conversational Cantonese, I can’t pronounce it for shit. Many of the words they use are customary, and have no meaning themselves, it’s just the construction that leads to the meaning. As a kid, I was a dumbass to filter out most of it (fuck) and focus on the meaningful phrases. That meant I lost most of the language (fuck).
