Talk about Exponential Decay

bad games1

Graph takes data from Steampowered.com. Steam is a client/platform for 2 million PC gamers at any time, to synch their games. To play, the person must connect to the Steam client by internet. Likewise, Steam records the number of players playing a game at that specific particular moment as well as other data like computer specs.

The two games featured are Rage, and Brink. Rage is the first game to feature the idTech5 engine (quake 5), which has lineage as one of the most popular FPS shooter engines ever. Brink is a multiplayer focused, spiritual successor to Wolf:ET, what had been free, arcade-like FPS. Both were expected to change the landscape.

Wow. The hype didn’t live up to expectations. Human interest, tolerance, or whatever decays exponentially. These people didn’t stop playing the game because they lost interest, they still had access to the game. (It’s near impossible to refund on steam). And it’s not like they lost the ability from free time as other games like Skyrim, Terraria amassed gigantic hours.
