My Heritage

I've got a rather unique surname that was created fairly recently (1800's?), which was originally from fujian, now in guangxi, used to be in vietnam, and now in the US I suppose. I'll visit my ancestral shrine in guangxi some time in my life, for I had inlaws who lived in guangxi who noticed it was a common shrine in the area. As for my mother's side of the family, she said she's ancestrally from Fangchenggang (防城港), so I'd like to pay that place a visit as well. Her family left around the 1860's/80's? (presumably because of the Taiping Rebellion) to become merchants. Her parents had the surnames of Tran(陈) and Trinh(鄭) and did pretty well until that whole Battle of Hue thing.

I'll try to take a genetic test as well from 23andme, as well as other family members just for the kick of it. I would be entirely surprised if we were anything but Southern Chinese.

Luckily, the Chinese didn't move too often back then, so there should be a pack of family members who are distant relatives back at China
