I made a top 10 recent (2000+) horror films list. You're free to argue and make your own, or recommend something similar, or only ignore this thread which is more likely. Here goes:
1. The Host - I don't think there's anything that can even come close to matching this. Sure, the anti-American stuff is a bit heavy-handed but the characters are great and you feel truly engaged.
2. Pitch Black - You'll notice that I have a fondness for low-budget stuff. Personally I find this to be the best space-horror out there.
3. Splinter - I greatly enjoy this little gem.
4. The Descent
5. Troll Hunter
6. Rogue - perfect beast-horror film.
7. The Mist - all the way down here because the crazy lady completely ruins the film on repeated viewings. She is a completely unnecessary and unrealistic character (in the sense of her influence, which goes from being described as the "town crazy" to suddenly a cult leader to offer human sacrifice to blood gods. Please. Maybe after a few decades of the mist).
8. Eight Legged Freaks - pure entertainment.
9. Monsters - highly enjoyable but not a horror movie in that sense. I very much am looking forward to Godzilla.
10. The Night Flier (1997, rule-breaker) - would have had a much higher place if not for the absolute ending which simply ruins it all.
Honourable mention: Dog Soldiers, not included because the it'd double-feature the director.
The contrarian: Freaks should never have been made.
