Alternative History

If the US didn't nuke Japan to end the Second World War

1. Naval Blockade
2. Isolation
3. Russia Invades Korea
4. Japan weakened to a point that it's not a threat anymore.

5. UN offers Japan, a peace treaty
6. South Korea for the end of war.
7. Japan would not have to admit defeat, only sign an unfavorable treaty
8. US stops blockade around Japan
9. Russians take over N. Korea
10. Communist revolution in S. Korea
11. US never gets involved in Korean War / Vietnam War

12. Fuck yeah.
...

1990's arrive. Communism falls. Same shit we have today.

Basically, the US pulled a sloppy job in communication. Japan didn't know it was going to be a nuclear attack. Thus they had no chance of avoiding it. US set Japan for failure.

They should have warned of:
1. Nuclear weapons
2. Possible targets, including civilian populations
3. Effects of atomic bombs
4. And then proceed to demonstrate the weapon in a non-habited area of Japan (Hokkaido?)
5. Offered days of surrender until the first bombing.

It was not a fair ultimatum by any means. Given the way the US conducted the end-game, Japan had little to no opportunity to avoid the civilian losses from nuclear attack.

Instead the US did it quick and dirty. They issued a piss-poor warning, then proceeded to declare nuclear war on Japan. They had every intention to bomb every major city every 2 days, until surrender.

I've seen comic books storylines with a more diplomatic overlords.
