This is how it works according to Swiss law.
There are three points that have to be fullfilled to validate use of force you have to ask yourself these three questions:
(1) Ist das eingesetzte Mittel geeignet/ Is the tool applied adequate?
(2) Ist die Tat erforderlich?/ Is the act needed?
(3) Ist die Tat verhältnismässig?/ Is the act proportional to the threat?
Example: There are children stealing cherries from your cherry tree. You have a rifle and you intend to shoot the children to stop them from stealing the cherries. Let's go through the questions: (1) Yes, the rifle is adequate in stopping the kids stealing the cherries. (2) Yes, you need to stop the kids from stealing cherries. (3) No fucking way is it proporitoanl to the threat of getting your cherries stolen to kill children.
